Mission

Chenango Canal Corridor Heritage Trail is a diverse group of individuals, organizations and state agencies working toward implementing a walking trail along the entire length of the Chenango Canal Corridor. Because some sections of the canal have been abandoned or returned to private ownership, we will be looking to use sections of the O & W Railway right of way and to implement portions of the trail.
To this end, we have completed the first project along the Canal to link the Towpath Trail in Bouckville, NY with the Village of Hamilton, NY.  We have also developed a proposed route for the trail from Utica, NY to Binghamton, NY - see interactive map.
If you are interested in this project and possibly coordinating with similar efforts along other part of the Canal, please contact us.    Email

October 2015 Update:  Because of a perimeter fence mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration, the trail on the west side of the airport was moved outside the fence.  The trail is fully open to the public from dawn to dusk.  There is also a trail on the east side of the airport leading to Woodman Road.  If one follows Woodman Road west for 1/2 mile the Towpath Trail is open north to Bouckville, about 41/2 miles and south past Woodman Pond back to the airport and points further south. Park at the Montgomery Street trail head opposite the gas station, or at the airport in Hamilton.  Alternatively, park at the Chenango Canal Cottage Museum in Bouckville at the intersection of canal road and Route 20.

Trail History

In December 2008, the Village of Hamilton received a permit from the DEC to clear the towpath along the canal on the West side of the airport going South from Eddy Road. This segment connects the existing towpath trail to Montgomery Street in the Village of Hamilton, next to the Courthouse.  It also has a spur that connects to Eaton Street in the village and the North end of the existing trail along the O&W RR into the Village.      Details
